It all seems kind of dire, doesn't it? Luckily, there are some things you can do to prevent your computer from becoming infected.
Spyware can be implanted at any time, so if you aren't using the Internet disconnect it. Many small businesses leave their computer system connected to the Internet at all times, and it poses a danger to every computer in the system. Businesses should also create Internet-use policies for employees to adhere to.
Avoid anything suspicious. Don't visit untrustworthy sites and don't open any attachments or links from people you don't know. Even if it is from someone you know, be wary if it's something you weren't expecting.
Protect your computer at all times by using firewall and anti-spyware software. Always keep them on and updated.
Read the full license agreement before installing anything on your computer. Also, if one computer is vital you might want to try installing new software on a test computer first.
Close pop-ups by clicking on the X. Never click on anything inside the ad, not even “No” or “Cancel.”
Spyware is everywhere. It can be bundled with legitimate programs or file-sharing software and included in websites, links, or attachments. The most important prevention method you can use is to be cautious and to think about what you're doing at all times while you're on the Internet.
